SpaceX CEO Elon Musk envisions a future in which rocket-based travel will replace airplanes and he shared that vision on Thursday during a presentation at the International Astronautical Congress. The company is working on a new rocket, the BFR, that’ll enable people to travel anywhere around the globe in 60 minutes.
According to Musk, most locations will be reachable in just 30 minutes. And all of this will be possible with a per-seat cost similar to existing “full fare economy.”
The same BFR will also bring people to the Moon and Mars. Musk says the ride will, at its worst, feel like a “mild to moderate amusement park ride.” Most of the trip will be spent in zero gravity, which will be “smooth, peaceful & silent.”
This kind of fast movement between cities is possible because the BFR can reach 18,000 miles per hour.
As of now, the BFR is only a hypothetical rocket. Musk hopes to start construction on the project in 6-9 months.
