The folks over at DxOMark have finished their analysis of the dual 20MP + 12MP Leica-powered solution on the Huawei Mate 9. The phablet managed to achieve a score of 85 points, putting it on par with the LG V20.

The dual camera setup on the Mate 9 was found impressive in both photo and video modes with regards to detail preservation, good exposure, and accurate white balance. For videos, the optical image stabilization proved to be quite useful too, which isn’t very surprising of course.

While taking photos, the Mate 9 camera was found to deliver inconsistent results outdoors when cloudy. It also reportedly suffers from ghosting issues and the flash leaves a color cast on some occasions. When it comes to video, the list of cons include a Jello effect when walking, visible noise in low-light, and loss of fine details when shooting in low light.

Overall though, DxOMark were impressed by the Mate 9’s camera and found it to be a significant improvement over previous efforts from the manufacturer. That said, if camera quality is very important to you, you should consider other smartphones that rank higher on the DxOMark Mobile rankings. These include the Apple iPhone 7, LG G5, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, Moto Z Force Droid, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Sony Xperia XZ, Sony Xperia Z5, Sony Xperia X Performance, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, HTC 10, and the Google Pixel.
