Thanks to the just released More Life album from Drake, Apple Music set a record for the most streams over a 24-hour period. The release of Drake’s LP on Saturday generated a record 89.9 million one-day streams for Apple Music. On the same date, Spotify had 61.3 million streams for My Life breaking a company mark for first-day album streams. Thanks to the new recording, Drake set a Spotify record for the most streams by a single artist on a given day with 76.4 million streams. The previous record holder was Ed Sheeran.
Some might find it surprising that Apple’s record figures top those of Spotify. After all, Spotify has five times the number of active subscribers as Apple has (20 million for Apple, 100 million for Spotify). In addition, Drake was the highest streamed artist on Spotify in 2015 and 2016. His song One Dance remains the most streamed song on the music streaming site.
Not that the Canadian rapper has struggled with Apple Music listeners. Last year’s Views album was an Apple Music exclusive at first, and was the first album in the history of the service to garner one billion streams.
