Virtual Reality is still in its nascent stage, but there are already plenty of developers working with it. No fewer than 530 VR games, demos, and software are currently on Steam. Space games make up a decent number of these VR games. From Elite Dangerous (a more interesting No Man’s Sky) to a simulation of the Apollo 11 mission. Detached, a space survival game is set to join these ranks in early 2017.

What makes Detached interesting
Detached, developed by Polish studio Anshar Studios, is a first-person survival game. Players have to do the usual manage resources, explore the dilapidated space station and radio for help before an untimely end. Players look through the helmet of their avatar, so it appears that an EVA suit figures heavily into the gameplay. Furthermore, the studio wants to add PvP elements to what is usually a strictly single player affair.

The official description of the game by the studio is this: “Detached is a First Person PvP Experience, focused on rivalry, exploration and survival, designed specifically for Virtual Reality headsets from scratch. The game features a single player and multiplayer mode, both of them focusing on intense skill based flying in an astronaut suit.”
The many VR experiences on Steam
Detached is both an interesting game in of itself and what it means for VR. Whilst it is possible to play without a VR headset, Anshar say that the game has been designed with VR in mind. Detached is also attempting to experimenting with the genre, rather than cashing in on a craze. The game is not releasing until 2017, so there are not many details available. Previous titles have shown that ambition is not the same as actual innovation, so judgement needs to be withheld until the game launches.
