D-Link cooperates with Alpha Networks, Aviacomm for Super Wi-Fi application
Irene Chen, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Friday 9 December 2016]

Networking/communication device vendor D-Link has disclosed it has partnered with fellow maker Alpha Networks and US-based RF IC design house Aviacomm to develop 802.11af devices for use in application of Super Wi-Fi solutions promoted by Microsoft.

Super Wi-Fi solutions are Wi-Fi connectivity on White Space, radio frequency band units mainly of 400-700MHz allocated for TV broadcast but actually not used due to TV digitization, according to director Paul W Garnett for Affordable Access Initiative established by Microsoft for boosting Super Wi-Fi solutions. Due to use of low frequencies and no licensing charges, Super Wi-Fi solutions entail low costs and render Internet access affordable in areas beyond coverage of conventional networks, with such areas accounting for 40% of global population, Garnett said.

Under Affordable Access Initiative, Microsoft has set up trial Super Wi-Fi networks in 25 countries through cooperation with governments and local mobile telecom carriers, Garnett noted. Super Wi-Fi solutions are mainly applied to last-mile connection to the Internet, hike in indoor wireless networks and IoT (Internet of Things), Garnett indicated. However, promotion of using White Space relies on relaxation of telecom regulations and only a few countries, mainly the US, Canada and UK, have done so, Garnett noted.

D-Link, Alpha Networks and Aviacomm have jointly developed initial 802.11af devices, including 3-mode wireless gateways and terminal network cards, with such devices in process of certification currently and to be launched in 2017, D-Link said.
