At the beginning of the year, Samsung said that, after the Note 7, it would bring us a “better, safer and very innovative” Galaxy Note handset. Naturally, this should be the Galaxy Note 8, which is expected to be released sometime in the second half of 2017.

This weekend, a photo allegedly showing the Galaxy Note 8 surfaced on the web, showing a device that’s nearly identical to the Galaxy S8. However, there are some problems with this leaked photo (embedded in the slideshow below).

First of all, if we look at the top of this alleged Note 8, we can’t see any sensors on the left side of the speaker grille – not even the infrared sensor that’s necessary for the smartphone’s iris scanner to work. Speaking of it, we do see an iris scanner on the right, near the front facing camera – that’s exactly how things are on the Galaxy S8 and S8+.

Furthermore, by increasing the luminosity and changing the contrast of this image a bit, we can notice some unnatural smudges and shades on the left of the speaker grille – a pretty clear signs that the image has been tampered with.

Next, the S Pen stylus that sits to the right of the alleged new Note looks just like the S Pen that came with the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. It’s quite possible that this really is a Note 7 S Pen – in this case, we’re pretty sure we’re not looking at a Note 8 here, but at a slightly ‘shopped S8 with an old S Pen as companion.

Even if this leaked image is fake – and it probably is – the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 could bear a strong resemblance to the Galaxy S8 and S8+, as it will likely have a similar dual-curve Infinity Display (and no physical home button). This was also suggested by a leaked schematic unveiled last month. Said schematic, however, included a speaker grille at the bottom of the device – this isn’t included on the S8, and doesn’t seem to show up in the leaked image that we’re presenting now, either.

According to rumors, the screen of the Galaxy Note 8 will be a 6.4-inch one, possibly with a 4K+ (2160 x 4428 pixels) resolution. The upcoming device might also feature 6 GB of RAM, and a next-generation Exynos 9 processor (or a Snapdragon 835 in the US and other select markets).

What do you say, could the Note 8 be just a larger Galaxy S8 with an S Pen and slightly upgraded internals? And, if that’s the case, would you be disappointed?
