Oakland, Calif. — March 20, 2012 — Scientific Learning Corp. (NASDAQ:SCIL) has selected Chamberlain Elementary School in South Dakota as a National Reference Site. Chamberlain Elementary joins a select and distinguished group of 34 National Reference Site schools and districts that exemplify the outstanding use of Fast ForWord®, a family of educational software products that accelerate learning by applying proven research on how the brain learns.

Part of Chamberlain School District 7-1, Chamberlain Elementary was selected due to its strong implementation of the Fast ForWord program and its commitment to increasing student achievement. As a National Reference Site, the school will serve as a resource for other schools and districts seeking advice on how to best use the Fast ForWord program to build brain fitness and increase students’ reading proficiency. The school will also participate in research to help Scientific Learning enhance the effectiveness of its products and services.

Chamberlain Elementary implements Fast ForWord software with all third and fourth grade students. Students work on the software 30 minutes a day in their classrooms using mobile computer labs. In addition, selected special education students and English language learners work on the Fast ForWord program to improve their foundational reading and language skills.

“Our goal with the Fast ForWord program, as with everything we do, is to improve student learning,” said Joel Bergeson, principal of Chamberlain Elementary. “Brain research shows us how important it is to exercise the brain —and students certainly get a workout when they’re using the Fast ForWord program. It helps students develop their memory, attention, processing and sequencing, which are critical skills for learning and reading success.”

“The Fast ForWord program supports my goal as a teacher to help all students succeed,” said Cheryl Toering, the Fast ForWord coach at Chamberlain Elementary. “An important benefit of the Fast ForWord Language program is that it helps students develop listening accuracy, which is so important to learning. By the time students get to the Fast ForWord Reading Series, they’re able to zoom ahead. Another benefit of Fast ForWord is that it gives students confidence. It’s an honor for our school to be chosen as a National Reference Site.”
