CD Projekt believes Cyberpunk 2077 will do even better than The Wit…

For those who don’t know, Cyberpunk 2077 is the next game from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developers, CD Projekt. The title takes place in the near future in a metropolis called Night City. While we don’t know much about the plot, we do know that communication is at the center of it. Players who do not speak the language much purchase translator implants to help them comprehend what other characters are talking about. Additionally, topics of transcendence are touched upon as technologies exist which allow you to step into the shoes of someone else and experience their thoughts and memories. Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in an oppressive society where augmented individuals are looked down upon.

Aside from these pieces of information, the developers haven’t revealed much about the game other than the fact it will feature flying cars and can be played from the first and third-person perspectives. Just like Star Wars: Battlefront, the viewpoint can be changed with the press of a button for either the single-player campaign or multiplayer component.

Despite keeping gamers in the dark about Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt still expects it to be an even greater commercial success than The Witcher 3. In an interview with Polish website Gazeta, cofounder Michal Kicinsk said:

“I am convinced that Cyberpunk 2077 may be a much greater commercial success than The Witcher 3. The futuristic world of Cyberpunk 2077 is closer to what we know from everyday life. It is also increasingly popular as evidenced of the phenomenon’s presence in a number of films, books, comics and games…I believe that in the case of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt will be able to fight not only for prestigious prizes and awards, but also for great commercial success.”

During the interview Kicinsk also called fantasy a niche genre. That’s only the case if games fail to construct a captivating world. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the Dragon Age series are great examples of how popular the genre is. Apart from that, creating a game featuring a modern setting and gunplay risks it becoming a generic experience due to the sheer volume of modern first and third-person games out there. Hopefully CD Projekt will be able to give us another amazing experience along the lines of The Witcher 3 despite these challenges.
