Sending severed heads, and much more PR DON’Ts
I wrote a “master list” of PR DON’Ts earlier this week, and now that listing has almost doubled as my fellow TechCrunch writers continued to expertise much more dangerous habits round pitches. So, listed below are one other 12 issues of what to not do when pitching a startup:
DON’T ship severed heads of the author you wish to cowl your story
Heads up! It’s bizarre to ship somebody’s skull to them.
This is an odd one, however imagine it or not, severed heads appear to roll into our workplace each couple of months because of the appearance of 3D printing. Several of us within the New York TechCrunch workplace obtained these “gifts” previously few days (see items subsequent), and apparently, I now have a severed head resting on my desk that I get to get rid of on Monday.
Let’s assume linearly on this one. Most journalists are writers and presumably perceive metaphors. Heads have been positioned on pikes within the Middle Ages (and sadly, generally lately) as a warning to different group members concerning the danger of difficult whoever did the decapitation. Yes, it’d get the eye of the individual you might be sending their head to, in the identical manner that burning them in effigy proper in entrance of them can entice eyeballs.
Now, I get it — it’s a demo of one thing, and possibly it’d even be humorous for some. But, why take the chance that the recipient goes to see the moderately apparent metaphorical connection? Use your noggin — no severed heads.
