Asus AIO VR leaks online, will be a stand-alone VR headset

Taiwanese PC hardware and smartphone maker Asus is reportedly looking to make a big splash in the VR market this year, with an All-in-One (Stand-alone) VR headset. Unlike most VR headsets that are currently on sale, the upcoming Asus VR headset will not require tethering to a PC/console or being connected to a mobile device to enjoy VR content on it. That means you will need nothing but the Asus AIO VR headset to enjoy VR content, presumably anywhere.

In terms of the design, the leaked render suggests the stand-alone VR headset from Asus could be similar to the Google Daydream VR headset, with the entire headset covered in soft fabric. Nothing else has been revealed at this point, except that the headset is going to be launched sometime later in 2017.

We are definitely very excited about the Asus AIO VR headset, as will be a lot more convenient to use than traditional VR headsets. However, the pricing will definitely be crucial, as consumers may not be too keen to pay a lot of money for a VR headset, even if it is a stand-alone unit.

Asus isn’t the only company working on a stand-alone VR headset. Quite a few other companies such as Oculus, Samsung, and Alcatel are also working on similar VR headsets. Out of the three companies, only Alcatel has confirmed that its stand-alone VR headset will be going on sale this year. Dubbed ‘Vision’, Alcatel’s VR headset packs smartphone internals and is expected to be priced in the same range as a high-end Android smartphone.
