LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Arima Optoelectronics has stopped production of blue-light LED chips and shifted production to AlGaInP models to avoid price-cut competition in the blue-light segment, according to the company.
Arima has shut down 40 MOCVD machines used to produce blue-light LED wafers and chips, while 18 have been transferred to produce AlGaInP LED wafers and chips, the company said.
There are relatively few makers of AlGaInP LED chips due to high technological barriers. Main competitors are Germany-based Osram Opto Semiconductors and China-based Sanan Optoelectronics, Arima noted.
Arima focuses AlGaInP chips on infrared (IR) applications for iris recognition, automotive dashboards, brake lamps and direction indicators, plant-growth lighting, LED lighting and security surveillance. The company has developed IR LED chips with wavelengths of 810nm, 850nm and 940nm.
Currently, China accounts for 56.6% of revenues from IR LED chips, Taiwan 19.2% and South Korea 16.3%, Arima indicated.
