To further strengthen its position, Apple has announced that it is opening two new research and development centers in China, in addition to two already in the works in Beijing and Shenzhen. The new centers will be built in Shanghai and Suzhou, and all four centers will open later this year.
The Cupertino company plans to invest over $500 million in the centers, with a focus on working with more local partners in the region to develop new technologies. The new centers make sense, as almost all of Apple’s hardware manufacturing is happening in China, and therefore it will reduce the gap between research and production.
“We are looking forward to working with more local partners and academic institutions through the expansion of R & D centers in China. We are honored to have excellent talent and positive entrepreneurial spirit in China And the developers and suppliers here to work together to make our business in this market to flourish,” said Dan Riccio, senior vice president of hardware engineering at Apple.
