Apple has clearly been working on autonomous vehicle technology for quite a while, but it’s just confirmed that initiative for the first time. CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company has an AI project based around autonomous vehicles. It’s not making its own car, but it’ll create tech that could be used by others, similar to Google.
For a time, some reports claimed Apple was trying to create a production car of its own. But that hasn’t been the claim in recent months.
We’re focusing on autonomous systems. It’s probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on. Autonomy is something that’s incredibly exciting for us and we’ll see where it takes us. – Cook
Apple began working on “Project Titan” in 2014. It hired over 1,000 engineers, yet most of them had left the project by 2016. They left due to Apple shifting its goals within the program.
