As expected, Apple has finally unveiled the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Although various leaked details gave us a rather clear picture of what to expect from the Apple’s next iOS flagship, there are some things about the new iPhones we didn’t know. The new iPhones doesn’t have any major design changes and the biggest improvements are under the hood and software.
The biggest design change is the lack of 3.5mm audio jack, among other changes that include revisited antenna lines, addition of dual rear cameras and more. The new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus still has the same curvy metal unibody construction and the display sizes are the same – 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches.
However, there are some improvements made to the chassis, which is now waterproof and dustproof. Since there is no 3.5mm audio jack, Apple has included a free Lightning dongle.
The new iPhones feature 25 percent brighter display, wide color gamut, color management, and 3D Touch.
The Home button has also undergone some big changes and is now non-mechanical, force sensitive solid state with Taptic Engine. Thanks to new home button, Apple managed to include stereo speakers on the iPhone, one at the bottom and the other at the top. It has twice the volume as the iPhone 6S, with increased dynamic range.
The iPhone 7 packs a completely new 12-megapixel rear camera with optical stabilization, f1.8 aperture and new six-element lens. The camera is 60 percent faster and 30 percent more energy efficient. New TrueTone flash complements the camera, with four LEDs that has a flicker sensor to make photos in artificial lighting look better.
As expected, the iPhone 7 Plus features dual rear camera setup that includes two 12-megapixel sensors – a wide-angle and a telephoto. The camera setup supports 2x optical zoom and up to 10x with software zoom.
Both models have the same front-facing camera has a new 7-megapixel FaceTime unit with auto image stabilization.
The heart of the new iPhones is the Apple A10 Fusion chip, which recently showed its potential via Geekbench. The new chip is 40x faster than the A9 and 2x faster than the A8. It packs two high-efficiency cores that run at 1/5th the power, and run low-power apps. All of that is automatically controlled by a new power controller.
There is no information on RAM amount, so we can assume it has 2 GB, although rumours have suggested that Apple might pack 3 GB.
Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus smartphones will go on sale on September 16, and will be available for pre-order on September 9. The pricing is the same as with the iPhone 6S, meaning the base models with 32 GB of storage start at $649 and $769, respectively. There are no 16 GB or 64 GB models, only 32 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB. Total of five color options will be available, as showed on the image below.
