Americans Are In Favor Of City Broadband

222

A new survey from Pew Research has found the majority of Americans support letting cities build their own broadband networks, something regular ISPs strongly oppose. Based on results from 4,000 people, Pew says 70% of Americans believe local governments should be able to offer broadband when current offerings are “too expensive or not good enough.”

Lobbying from ISPs has contributed to over 20 states banning municipal broadband. It’s unlikely there will be much traction anywhere in the US for widespread city-built broadband.

In places where it has been implemented, such as in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the results appeared to be quite positive for the surrounding area.
