Whole Foods, one of the largest grocery store chains in the US, will be acquired by Amazon for $13.7 billion ($42 per share.) The deal isn’t going to have any impact on Whole Foods’ branding for stores and it’ll retain John Mackey as CEO. This deal should close later in 2017.

This partnership presents an opportunity to maximize value for Whole Foods Market’s shareholders, while at the same time extending our mission and bringing the highest quality, experience, convenience and innovation to our customers, – Mackey

With this acquisition, Amazon will immediately have a massive retail footprint. Over time it plans to grow that footprint with Amazon-branded stores that offer a unique form of self-service.

Millions of people love Whole Foods Market because they offer the best natural and organic foods, and they make it fun to eat healthy, – Jeff Bezos, CEO, Amazon
