Excellent iPod Speaker Dock,
I hadn’t realized that a universal dock adapter is required so I just (carefully) stuck my iPod onto the connector without the adapter. It worked fine, but I understand that such use can put the female connector within the iPod at risk of damage. I rummaged around in a drawer and found my original iPod box and there was a dock adapter inside which I installed in the Onkyo. Adapters can be purchased quite reasonably from Apple and the Apple website has clear information about which adapter fits which iPod.
The Onkyo is very good-looking and quite good-sounding. My primary use for my iPod is playback of podcasts I get from NPR and The New Yorker magazine. Reproduction of voices is excellent and the volume is sufficient to fill a room, if not an auditorium. There is not excessive distortion at full volume. Music also sounds great, as good as in any high-quality table radio, if not strictly-speaking hi-fi. The Onkyo has tone controls and a super bass setting (the speakers are quite small).
I’d been looking for a high-quality iPod speaker dock for some time. Many of the inexpensive speaker docks were described in reviews as significantly flawed and unreliable. I have used an Onkyo stereo amplifier which is of very high quality for many years. Finding the Onkyo speaker dock was thus very gratifying and it seems to be exactly what I need.
